Celebrity interns: Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ common story

Before their prolific meeting, at the origin of Saving private Ryan, Catch me if you can, or The Terminal, both Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks were surprisingly interns.

In 1963, At the age of 17, a young Spielberg could be found at the Hollywood Universal studios, sneaking into any departments he could. This experience was decisive for Spielberg, as he could watch directors at work. His commitment in the editing department paid off : he found himself realizing a short movie called Amblin, and Universal executives were so impressed by his work that they gave him a seven year contract, making him the youngest director hired by the studios. The rest is history : Oscars for Best Director in 1993 for The Schindler’s list, and in 1999 for Saving Private Ryan.

11 years later, at the other side of the country, a 21 year-old Tom Hanks was recruited as an intern by Vincent Dowling, head of the Great Lakes Theater Festival in Cleveland, Ohio. During his internship, Hanks took care of the lighting, set design, and stage management. He was so interested by his experience that his contract was extended to 3 years, during which he found the courage to put himself under the spotlight : he notably won the Cleveland Critics Circle Award for Best Actor for a performance in The Two Gentleman of Verona by Shakespeare, the first award of one of the best actor to ever touch the silver screen : Oscars for Best actor in 1993 for Philadelphia, and in 1994 for Forrest Gump.

Spielberg and Hanks met for the first time in 1986 for the shooting of a relatively unknown movie, The Money Pit. Almost a decade later, Spielberg directed Hanks in Saving Private Ryan, followed by Catch Me If You Can four years later and The Terminal in 2004, representing one of the most successful actor-director partnership.

Be sure not to miss Hanks and Spielberg’ new collaboration, Bridge of Spies, portraying James Donovan (Hanks), a Brooklyn insurance lawyer who risked his reputation and his family’s safety to ensure a fair trial for Rudolf Abel, a Soviet spy arrested by the FBI in 1957 during the Cold War. The movie is set to be on screen on Oct. 16. 2015.

Internships in General

My name is Priyanka Rauniyar. I am 21 Years. I am studying International Business and Management Studies. To complete my second year of my study, I am now doing an internship in New Romney, UK. This is my first internship. I have never done any internship before this one.

The term internship is very broad. For me Important topics related to internship are the place of internship, the job responsibilities, the experience that you will go through this internship, the challenges you will face and how you will be able to overcome them and what at the end the overall impressions is of the internship you have done for a certain period of time.

The first day of an internship you learn the basics, afterwards you learn more and more and get more responsibilities. It is about a working experience in a special field in a company that you chose to work at. You go for an internship to improve your skills and to learn as much as possible from everyone and especially from your higher level managers. An internship is about office settings, working tools, working hours, interactions with other groups and activities.

Every company has their own rules about internships. The Internships can be paid, unpaid or for credit.

Internship in UK from an Italian

I never did an internship before, and I think that internships, expecially abroad, are the best things that one young person can do in his life. In my university, the Faculty of Economics in Turin, I study Marketing and I’m at the third age of my university’s schooling: I hope to be graduate this September. During those three years we have to do not less than 150 hours of internship, in Italy or abroad.

I think that a student needs more than this number of hours to learn how people work in a company: and of course if the internship is abroad the student needs much time to learn the language. In fact, I think that people need three months or more to improve a language.

In Italy is difficult to find an internship if you are not graduate: for italian companies in fact are suitable only graduate people, especially with a score higher than 100110. For me is right to accept only students with an high score, but for people that are studying is too difficult to find some internship until italian companies will accept only graduate students. That is one of the reasons why I think that for a student in general (expecially an Italian one) is better to search for an internship abroad.

Live with other young people, improve your language, learn how to work in a different country with different way of working and of living are only some of all the advantages that people can have doing an internship abroad. In fact, in our globalized world is better to know other languages and other way of working and thinking. That makes you suitable for much more companies in many countries. An internship far from their home helps also people to be indipendents and to learn how to live alone or with some coetaneous.

In my opinion this is the most helpful thing that an internship abroad gives to you: living and working in contact with people from all around the world helps you to learn a lot of things: this makes you a better person for your future work and for yourself too.

Internship in UK from a German

My name is Nilany Uthayaventhan. I am 21 years old and this is my first internship abroad. Because I am studying Mathematics, English and Geography to become a teacher I had already done some internships in Germany.

The first internship I did was in a practice of pediatrist what I had to do while I was in the 9 class. It was a different experience to work there because I did not know before what I have to do, but it was really nice and I enjoyed it . After finishing my A-Level I started to study and after the first semester i have to do a internship called “Orientierungspraktikum”.

The first two weeks I was in a primary school in my own city and after that I was in a elementary school. This internship has shown me that I have chosen the right profession because i love to stay in front of a class and teach them about world:). Moreover i have learned much about to work with four really different students and to organize things together. At first it was difficult but later it was really great and at the end we were good friends. During the third semester i did a internship in a school again and i had to face some difficulties in planning and organization things. But we mastered these problems very successfully as a team. In general internships are important for everyone because it will help you to get some experience about work and different fields. Also it gives you the opportunity to choice your job that fits to you the best. Of course we learn more then we can think of.

A internship abroad is a little bit different than a internship in the home country. It makes you self-confident and independent. Also it is the best way to learn the language of that country. You will learn about the culture, behavior, food, people and a lot more. Especially in the internship-UK your will learn not only about the country we you are you will also learn about many other countries and people. And the most important one is that you will make some many friends. :)

Public Relations Internship in Italy

Hello every body! My name is Giulia, I`m 23 years old and I come from a little city near Cattolica.

I`m studying Public Administration in Bologna, and one year ago I had the possibility to do an internship in my field in contemporary with my studies to improve my skills and learn more. I would like to share this internship experience with all of you.

I was responsible to accept all the students and people who wanted having information about the university, the different degree courses, the tests to have access to the course and so on.

At the beginning I was very scared for all the amount of informations that I had to give and know, but at the same time, I was very excited to learn new things about my University and to deepen what I already knew.

I started in the peak period of affluence, September, when all the new students came there to ask all the information for their new courses of study!

In these case you not only should give the information that they want but also ensure them that we will be always available for them.

I worked there for 3 months and I can say that it has been a very great experience. During this period I have learnt a lot of things. First of all how works with other people, in the same place, sharing information to improve each other, to pay attention, understanding if there is something wrong, something bad in the air, etc,. All my colleagues were older than me and with many experience but the environment was very warm, although some times there were problems or conflicts between some of them. It`s normal that in different offices there are several small groups closer than other. Secondly I have improved my communication skills by dealing with many different and some times difficult situations. I had the opportunity to meet many different people, who came from different places in Italy and around the world. I enjoy observing different attitudes and behaviours so after a while it was easy for me to understand how I should handle each one of them for example by giving more information, suggesting something more or different and so on.

At the end I can assure you that I have gained a lot from this experience. This is why, I suggest you to seize the opportunity and have an Internship either in your country or abroad. I think that is the best way to improve yourself, your skills, your abilities and to explore and learn many interesting things that you could never expect you can receive from one particular experience. In this way you can really enrich your personality and feel the change in yourself.

Accounting Internship in Greece

Hello, my name is Niki I am 25 and I come from Greece. Recently I fulfiled my studies in Business Administration and I decided to have an Internship abroad. But before that I had my first experience as an Intern in a Greek company for 3 months. I worked at the Accounting office of a group company with main activities at the sector of cement.

In a professional basis an Internship is a really good opportunity to gain some practical knowledge on the field that we have spent several years of studying and research. It is completely different to read about Economics and actually see how everything is applied in order to achieve goals. Especially in business related studies it is essential to have working experience at the same time with your University studies. So an Internship is the best way to be part of a company and try to understand and embrace the whole philosophy behind it’s function.

In a personal basis an internship can help you to evolve your skills, understand your strengths and weaknesses and learn how to work as a member of a team. After a while you understand that you need to stop thinking only as an individual but also setting as high priority the well being of you and your colleagues as part of the company’s team. Through an Internship it is offered you the chance to learn more about yourself and your possibilities before you decide which field is more suitable for you.

In my opinion these kind of programs must be part of the studies in every University. Only by gaining experience in a real working environment you can be absolutely sure that the studies that you decided to follow after high school are the ideal for you. An Internship can be the intermediate level also between your Bachelor and your Master. In order to specialize your knowledge in a certain department you need first to discover what the market demands at the moment and what can help you diverse from all the others.

To summarise I consider the Internships to be absolutely necessary especially now that the competition is getting higher and higher while the most of the young people are searching for opportunities all around the world.

My internships changed my life :)

My name is Anki, I am 23 and I am from Germany. I am a student of International Management in the 3rd year and next to my high school and university I did several internships.

For me it is important to both collect experiences and find out my abilities and interests. In my opinion work experience is improving the business and private skills and helps developing self esteem and the ability to care for yourself.

While doing an internship an intern gets confronted with a different environment that he or she was used to in school. To work in a real company challenges ones autonomy and the intern experiences being responsible for first small then bigger tasks or projects.

In my previous time I already did 9 internships in very different companies. For me it is important to have a wide horizon and see as many scopes and views as possible. I worked in the retail, social and catering service as well as in a multi media company, in the career service of my university and I was the manager of the Erasmus club at my university.

During all these internships I learned to solve several different issues that came up in financial, social or management areas. I got to know the structure of every of these companies. Working with or for other people gives you the possibility to see other peoples point of views and ways to work. I also used the chance to go abroad for doing an internship and for me even more interesting as the different company cultures are the cultural differences. When I did a marketing internship in Ghana, Africa I was surprised how diverse the people are working and how different they put their priorities compared to how we do in Germany.

I can say for myself that I learned a lot during my previous internships. While doing them I could not only find out, that some areas I thought I was interested in, are not the area I further want to work in. But also I developed and improved my personal, language and business skills.

I can recommend doing an internship to everybody!

Do a small one, do a big one, do it in your hometown or abroad, do it one week or six months.. but you should do it  :)

Internships abroad

I never did an internship before, and I think that internships, expecially abroad, are the best thing that one young person can do in his life.

In my university, the Faculty of Economics in Turin, I study Marketing and I’m at the third year of my university’s schooling: I hope to be graduate this September.

In Italy it is difficult to find an internship if you are not graduate: for italian companies in fact are suitable only graduate people, especially with a score higher than 100110.

For me it is acceptable to take only students with an high score, but for people that are studying is too difficult to find some internship until italian companies will accept only graduate students.

This is one of the reasons why I think that for a student in general (expecially an Italian one) is better to search for an internship abroad.

Live with other young people, improve your language, learn how to work in a different country with a different way of working and of living are only some of all the advantages that people can have doing an internship abroad.

In fact, in our globalized world is better to know other languages and other way of working and thinking. That makes you suitable for much more companies in many countries.

An internship far from their home helps also people to be indipendents and to learn how to live alone or with some coetaneous.
